What is Eczema? My Story

Updated: Aug 22, 2020

Eczema aka atopic Dermatitis:

Eczema is “A noncontagious inflammation of the skin, characterized chiefly by redness, itching, and the outbreak of lesions that may discharge serous matter and become encrusted and scaly.” according to thefreedictionary.com

Atopic dermatitis this is basically the same but it is a more broader term referring to any irritation that causes your skin to become inflamed like a allergic reaction.

Skin lesions,Yikes! sounds like something out of and old bible verse, right next to and Jesus cured his affliction. No it isn’t a biblical disease but it feels that monumental when you are a sufferer like myself. It starts to bring on a paranoia like no other. At first when I was a child I referred to it as heat rash. I thought I was just sensitive to the heat. My mother, bless her heart, would do the best she could to control it and keep me comfortable. She tried powders, ointments, creams and eventually the dermatologists who prescribed more powders ointments and creams.

Off and on, I would go through periods of no rash to severe outbreaks but no one could really tell me why and what was the cause. Some would say heat, sensitive skin, fragrances in lotions, soaps and perfume, detergents, heat etc and the list can go on and on. But no one, even the doctor could pinpoint the exact cause.

I really one year when I was 5 years old we took a trip to Africa and it was so beautiful. My auntie had a house right on the beach and we enjoyed playing on the beach. However I was miserable because I had a terrible eczema outbreak. See I wasn’t use to the african food so my mom brought cans of spaghetti o and other 5 year old kid friendly foods. I remember! Now looking back I realize it was the chemicals in the can and the tomato sauce mixed with the extreme heat, a recipe for disaster of an eczema kind.

I am mostly affected on the arms neck and back of legs behind knees..This is the typical areas. The photo below is a recent outbreak after detoxing. Oh yes. Detoxing will aggravate eczema because you are releasing toxins and they love to try to get out via the skin. I was miserable again. They say that allergies affect you mostly between the ages of 5-16 then clear up for some years only to return in you later years like late 30s to 40s. Go figure. But it is definitely food related.
